An information-based approach to staff efficiency

Abstract

This article advocates reorganization of workflow and realignment of workload to address retention and attendance problems in nursing homes. The author argues that while many factors contribute to staff turnover and call-outs, the primary issue is that nursing and direct-care staff frequently have workloads that do not match their job descriptions or management's perception of what is needed. The author discusses ways of gathering information about workload and restructuring the organization chart more effectively.
