In
addition to a growing number of direct-care
worker associations, many other organizations are working
to improve the quality of jobs for direct-care workers. Issues
identified as needing improvement include low wages, lack of adequate
benefits, lack of respect and professional fulfillment, scarce
opportunities for continuing education and professional advancement,
inadequate or punitive supervision, and unreasonable workloads.
Did
You Know?: Direct-care workers also have disproportionately
low rates of health insurance. In 1999, one third of home care
aides (32.1 percent) and a quarter (25.2 percent) of CNAs in nursing
homes had no health insurance, compared to the one sixth (16 percent)
of all U.S. workers
