In 2000 108,131 (14.3%) of South Dakota's 754,844 citizens were aged 65 or older, a 5.7% increase since 1990. The US Census estimates that by 2030 South Dakota's elder population will increase by 71%. By that year the traditional caregiving workforce (women aged 25 to 44) will decrease by 19.7%.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2004 6,340 nursing assistants and 970 personal care/home care aides worked in South Dakota earning an average of $$9.05 and $8.16 an hour, respectively. The number of home health aides working in South Dakota was not available; on average they earn $9.01 an hour. These numbers do not include many direct-care workers who are self-employed.
According to a survey by the American Healthcare Association (AHCA) in 2002 the statewide vacancy rate for South Dakota CNAs was 7.8% and the turnover rate was 51.1%. It is anticipated that the state's already high rates of direct-care worker vacancies and turnover will get worse as the population continues to age, and the 'care gap' between those needing care and those available to care for them continues to widen.
